Cantonese Opera Charity Performance, a fundraising collaboration with Mrs Jeannie Tien
In July 2012, Assisi Hospice had the privilege of having the stars from one of China’s leading Cantonese opera troupes lend their talents to help raise funds for the hospice.
Initiated by Mrs Jeannie Tien, Assisi Hospice’s former Fundraising Chairman, we were honoured to have top artistes from the Wuchuan City Cantonese Opera Troupe dedicate 2 nights, out of their 6-night performance in Singapore, in aid of our mission.
The charity nights on 22 & 23 July 2012 saw the Wuchuan artistes share their stage with Singapore’s own opera enthusiasts at the Kreta Ayer People’s Theatre in a colourful performance. There was even a theme song that was especially composed to commend the services and care provided to patients at Assisi Hospice.
Our Guests of Honour for the 2 charity nights were Ms Ho Ching, Assisi’s Patron, on 22 July and Mr Yam Ah Mee, Chief Executive Director of People’s Association on 23 July. Also gracing the event were Singapore’s Archibishop Nicholas Chia, as well as government officials of Wuchuan City which included their Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Director of the Propaganda Department.
The charity performances was a rare treat for the audience and we are thankful to the generous sponsors who had purchased tickets for the elderly poor to attend, making this a truly cultural and community event. Our patients also came, assisted by staff and volunteers, to enjoy the evening’s performance and were in awe of the brilliant colours and impressive moves of the artistes.
We are grateful for the support from the community and our sponsors namely, Keppel Corporation, Tote Board, Hong Leong Foundation, Lee Foundation and Ngee Ann Kongsi.
Proceeds from the 2 charity nights, coupled with a joint grant from Tote Board and Singapore Turf Club, enabled us to achieve our fundraising target of $200,000.
Thank you all for your support. The funds raised will help us towards providing better care for our patients.
