If you frequent heartland markets in Bukit Panjang, Ang Mo Kio or Tampines, you may have met Uncle Lua Chong Poo. For over 20 years, the friendly 69 year-old went from market to market, selling ladies’ accessories at the stalls. At home, his wife, Mrs Lua, lovingly packed his goods and cared for his daily needs. The couple, who have no children, lived simply but contentedly. Uncle Lua shared, “It is my greatest blessing to have married her. She is a good wife. She takes very good care of me.”
Ten years ago, Uncle Lua was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Despite frequent hospital admissions and breathlessness, he continued working to make ends meet. The pandemic halted his business for a few years, and when his condition worsened in 2021, he was forced to stop work. With Mrs Lua as his sole caregiver, the couple relied on their savings to survive.
Worried about finances and his wife’s future, Uncle Lua said, “At that time, the doctor told me that I had 3 years left. I was worried about what would happen to my wife after I die, and I did not want to spend any more money.” Hence, Uncle Lua delayed seeking treatment even when he was in agony due to his symptoms. It was only in March 2024, when his whole body became swollen, that he sought help at the hospital. After treatment to relieve his water retention issue, he was referred to Assisi Hospice Day Care for palliative care.
At Assisi Hospice, Uncle Lua received medical care, physiotherapy and psychosocial support. His breathlessness was better managed and he regained some mobility. He felt heard by the care team. “Here, they listen and understand,” he shared. “They know how to help me.” As his illness progressed, Assisi Hospice continued to support the couple through inpatient respite care, free home care visits, and eventually inpatient care when Mrs Lua could no longer manage alone. During Chinese New Year this year, we fulfilled their wish for a reunion meal with family at the hospice, creating a precious moment of warmth and togetherness. Your generosity makes journeys like Uncle Lua’s possible. With your support, we can continue to walk alongside families in need, providing compassionate care at every stage of serious illnesses.
